"In my presentation I will discuss my circuitous journey through the worlds of high technology and music, and how I arrived at my current career as full-time composer. Along the way, I will touch on such topics as how my compositional style has changed over the years, what a composer actually does, and the special challenges of writing a concerto."

Lee Actor's Guitar Concerto will premiere 8 pm Saturday, April 21, at Le Petit Trianon with Marc Teicholz, guitar, and the Mission Chamber Orchestra (more ...)

Cecilia Gaerlan's 2002 stage play, Brillliance Within the Darkness, examines the life, music and times of the blind Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo.

Brilliance within the Darkness is a multicultural, multimedia production combining theatre and the music of Joaquin Rodrigo (Concierto de Aranjuez). The story of Joaquin Rodrigo’s life is a musical journey that crosses cultural boundaries (Spain, France, Germany) and depicts seminal points in history including the Spanish Civil War, World War II and the deportation of Jews into concentration camps.

It is also the story of how a blind man triumphs over his adversity through his music. Cecilia Gaerlan will share her discovery of Joaquin Rodrigo and his music through her research and collaboration with the composer's only child, Cecilia Rodrigo as well as Joaquin Nin-Culmell, the Cuban-American composer who was Rodrigo's friend and colleague. She also used the poetry of Lope de Vega, "Rimas Sacras" as the unifying theme of the play.

Also, live radio broadcast 2 pm Friday April 13 on KKUP 91.5 FM:
Cecilia Gaerlan and Mission Chamber Orchestra conductor, Emily Ray, will discuss sample guitar concertos, including those of Vivaldi, Rodrigo, and Lee Actor.
